一日，神社境内发现一具男子尸体，怀中还藏着一张类似建筑图纸的纸片。捕吏平次立即展开调查，但同僚万七却认为这只是普通的盗窃杀人案。南町奉行所的与力笹野新三郎却透露，案件背后可能隐藏着巨大的阴谋，并请求平次协助查案。与此同时，一支在江户引发话题的旅艺团来到城中，招牌女艺人燕子以动人的歌声和表演吸引众人，平次与八五郎等人也前去观看，却察觉她的眼神中透着难以言说的寂寞。不久，瓦版突然报道燕子与团员的恋情丑闻，使整个江户议论纷纷，剧团内部也开始互相猜疑。随着调查深入，神社命案与旅艺团的风波逐渐交织，更可怕的杀人事件接连发生，一场谜团重重的大案就此展开，也奠定了“江户名捕钱形平次”的传奇开端。
